Through its participation in the Water, Energy, Technology, and Environment Exhibition (WETEX), the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is promoting a raft of initiatives underscoring its commitment to enhance the environmental sustainability concept. The exhibition, which kicked off yesterday at the Dubai World Trade Center and runs through April 23rd, is held by the Supreme Council of Energy & DEWA and features a wide participation of public, semi-public entities as well as key international businesses specialized in this field.

Abdul Mohsen Ibrahim Younes, CEO of Strategy & Corporate Governance and Chairperson of Energy & Green Economy Committee at the RTA, said: “Through its sectors & agencies, the RTA is attaching considerable importance to the green economy concept by adopting the highest international standards in optimizing power & water consumption, conserving the environment and sustaining the public health. The RTA has managed to make several achievements in its strategic projects that had set the base for this drive in line with the policy of Dubai Government nurturing a green & sustainable environment at world-class standards.

“During the events of this annual showpiece, the RTA is exhibiting a host of valuable initiatives presented by different agencies. The Licensing Agency is exhibiting the Green Points app and other relevant licensing services, whereas the Public Transport Agency is showcasing the electric abra / bus and highlighting the benefits of using clean energy to realize our strategic objectives in this regard. The Dubai Taxi Corporation is exhibiting a model of the electric motor used for hybrid vehicles, narrating the environmental benefits of this sort of vehicles in terms of the effective contribution it generates in saving power consumption and offering optimal options for conserving the environment. The Rail Agency will be running a visual presentation about the impact of the electrically-powered tram technology on the local community environment and its role in reducing the carbon footprint in line with our goals of conserving natural power sources. The Traffic & Roads Agency will be promoting the Smart Drive app; which helps motorists figure out the traffic condition of roads in the Emirate to avoid congested or accident spots through the GPS, and use alternative roads which in turn reduces carbon emissions. The Agency will also exhibit the mParking app; which assists in identifying vacant parking slots and accordingly reduces the movement of vehicles in search for parking slots.

“RTA’s participation in this international event offers a platform for showcasing its initiatives and strategic plans for achieving a green & sustainable environment. To consolidate this drive, the RTA always endeavours to save water & power consumption in its premises, and also save power in its transit means offering services to various community segments,” continued Abdul Mohsen.

“The strategic initiatives of the RTA were part & parcel of planning & constructing an array of brilliant projects which have made a difference in reducing the negative environmental impacts, optimizing power consumption and supporting the green economy in the UAE and Dubai Emirate. The RTA has managed in a record time to rank Dubai amongst the leading modern metropolises in the fields of mass transport and associated infrastructure. The Emirate has managed to entice increasing numbers of public transport users spanning residents, visitors and tourists. Last year, the RTA rolled out 32 power-saving initiatives, in addition to 8 initiatives in support of the green economy in various affiliated sectors and agencies; which contributed to generating savings to as much as 15 million dirham in 2014, and at the same time minimizing carbon footprint in comparison with previous years. The recent achievements of the RTA and its copious efforts to undertake environment-friendly projects have enabled it to snatch the BGreen award as the most sustainable government entity in the region in 2014,” concluded the CEO of Strategy & Corporate Governance and Chairperson of Energy & Green Economy Committee at the RTA.
